Types of Candles

Candles of today come in a lot of different shapes and sizes and serve various purposes. There are decorative candles, scented candles, candles for special occasions, and candles for practical purposes. Most homes of this era have at least one type of candle if not more. Below is a list of the various types of candle and some of the purposes that they serve.

Taper: These are long slender candles ranging from 5 to 18 inches length (height) and are to be burned in an upright position. These are used in many instances as decorative elements and are often referred to as a dinner candle. They are sometimes used to add romance to certain settings.

Pillar: Candles that are self standing but burned on a head resistant holder or container. They are normally thick and come in various shapes such as round, square, triangular, etc. Some have more than one wick.

Votive: These are small round candles about 1.5x2.5 and can be placed into containers to catch the molten wax. These holders or containers are usually made out of glass and can be cleaned and reused.

Container: These candles are poured into a non-flammable container that makes them advantageous over some of the other types of candles. A lot of these are scented because a lower melting point type of wax can be used. These also burn without any worry of dripping wax.

Tea-light: These are small round candles poured into their own containers, usually metal, about 1 inch in diameter by 3/4 inch high. These can be burned and displayed in various ways.

Floating: These candles come in many shapes and colors but are usually thin and have convex bottoms which make them float in an upright position. They are likely to be displayed more than one at a time and used for special occasions such as wedding, conventions, parties etc.

Specialty: These are normally in unusual shapes and can even be sculptured or poured into molds which give them these shapes. Some come with decorative painting or art works in varied colors. Lettering on these candles are not unusual.

Other: There are still some other types of candles that are made for specific purposes such as candles made with citronella oil to be used outdoors for insect repellents.
