An Important Part of Our Lives
Arts and crafts comprise a whole host of activities and hobbies that are related to making or revamping things with ones own hands and utilizing ones skills. There are the handicrafts or "traditional crafts" (doing things the old way) and all of the others. Some crafts have been practiced for centuries and some are relatively modern or new. At one time, a lot of these crafts were practiced out of necessity or to save money which was not readily available to a lot of people.
Many activities called "crafts" were, at one time, professions where apprentices worked under master-craftsmen for low wages to refine their skills over a period of years. By the time their training was complete, they were well-equipped to set up trades for themselves earning their living with skills that could be traded directly within the community, often for goods and other services.
The industrial revolution and modernization of production processes gradually reduced or eliminated many of the roles that the professional craftsmen played. These have been reduced to the extent that "crafts" are presently seen as a form of hobby or art.
Crafts are presently looked upon as a source of recreation and relaxation. Some individuals do get some monetary value from their skills and crafts. Some still make a living doing what they consider a hobby.
Most crafts require a combination of skill, patience, and pride. A lot people have some "God given" talents but everyone is not interested in all crafts. There are numerous choices that you can make to find your individual preference. Some are very much like the "crafts" of old and are handed down through families from generation to generation.
If a person is a true craftsman, there is one thing that can be agreed upon by all. There is to much pride involved to rush the process of perfecting something. Crafts greatly emphasize this sense of pride and a quest for perfection. Most crafts are products of artistic production or creation. A lot of them require a high degree of knowledge and some require very little knowledge or skill.
Whichever the case may be, crafts are a very good source of satisfaction and relaxation. Some crafts are directly connected to other crafts practiced by the same person. Wood crafts is a good example of this. Making an item such a furniture from wood is one form of craft while finishing the item can also be considered a craft.
There are many sources of craft items that bring a lot of satisfaction to many people. Some favorite sources of mine are thrift stores and yard sales. This also holds true for the hobby of collecting.
There are so many "crafting" possibilities that there exists a craft for anyone that is truly interested in finding their source of enjoyment. There are group or family crafts that can be participated in by more than one person. Some of these crafts have specialized areas that seem to lend themselves better to group activities.
Whatever your crafting passion may be, go at it with enthusiasm. Let it be a source of personal pride and fulfillment. Display or show the finished product with great satisfaction.
