The hobby of collecting is based on the interest of the collector and can consist of acquiring any group of items. People collect these items for various reasons and special interests. There could be some interesting connection from the past or merely an attraction for some feature of the collected item. Some of the more popular are coin collecting, stamp collecting, baseball card collecting, and comic book collecting. I have at sometime in my life had a collection of every one of these items.
Comic Book Collecting is a prime example of collecting for various reasons. These reasons could be because of a certain author, artist, main character, age, value, or storyline. I personally collected comics and never read a complete story. In the time period of my collection, the values were not so diluted by over production and the mass introduction of new characters. The art work in the older books was great and the value on some was even greater because certain artists did the drawings.
Another popular category looked upon by collectors is coins. Coin collecting was once a relatively expensive hobby because of the limits of types of coins to collect. Some people however did collect sets based on year and location of minting. Penny collections were very popular at one time because this was one set that both the young and old could afford. Today, due to the minting of state quarters and other special edition coins, there is a greater variety that lends itself to collecting by those who cannot afford to invest great amounts of money. There will always be some who can afford to invest and collect the more expensive coins groups such as gold ones.
Stamp collecting is another interesting hobby that appeals to some people. One of the most interesting aspects of this hobby is that you can easily get stamps representative of areas all over the world and you do not have to spend a lot of money in the process. Some stamps can be acquired for free and others bought in groups of 500 to 1000 for little cash output. He again, if you find out that stamp collecting is something that you are really interested in you can spend very little or a lot of money, whichever you desire.
The last collecting hobby that I will mention here is probably the one that has always been the one that has meant the most to me. This is sports card collecting and more specific baseball cards. This fascination in these goes way back to the time when I saved up a nickel and rode my bicycle to the store to buy a pack of cards in hopes of finding someone from the NY Yankees. This was the time when you had great players such as Mickey Mantle and Yoggi Berra. These players were not only know by their names but by the teams that they played for. I separated the cards into teams and stored them in a small tool boy that was made especially for me. Disposing of or ruining any card was considered a sin. I was a serious collector of baseball cards and to
this day, I can walk into a store and and see new packs of cards and get a certain feeling. Every now and then, I will buy a pack just to see what the new editions look like. They don't cost a nickel anymore. (See attached article)
